Pronto aprendió a tocar el piano de forma autodidacta y a escribir sus arreglos para canciones de éxito de otros autores, que fueron aplaudidas por el público. Siguió escribiendo sus propias canciones y con 23 años publicó su primer gran éxito “Alexander Ragtime Band” que le catapultó a la fama y con 25 años estrenó su primer musical en Broadway.
A lo largo de 60 años de carrera escribió más de 1.000 piezas, incluyendo números de baile, baladas y canciones de amor para 17 espectáculos de Broadway, como “This is the army”, “Call me Madam” o “Annie get your gun”. Para el cine trabajó en 15 películas con gente de la talla de Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Ethel Merman o Marilyn Monroe como “Sombrero de copa”, “Sigamos la flota”, “Desfile de Pascua”, “Luces de candilejas” o “Navidades blancas”.
