Cuidó exquisitamente la música que acompañaría sus películas como veremos trabajando con músicos del pop o el rock, como Bee Gees, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd y con compositores como Paul Williams, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Trevor Jones, Randy Edelman, John Williams, Rachel Portman o Giorgio Moroder.
Aunque su primer guion para el cine fue una película de amor adolescente, tras algunos trabajos en televisión dio el salto a la dirección con su siguiente guion para el cine con un musical infantil, pero huyó del encasillamiento de las películas para todos los públicos cambiando rápidamente de género, manejándose con soltura en todos los géneros.
