Trabajó en Hollywood en películas como “Swing time” con Fred Astaire y Ginger Rogers y ganó dos Oscar a la mejor canción original por “The last time I saw Paris” (1941) y “It might as well be spring” (1945), aunque se prodigó más en Broadway. Hizo la adaptación al inglés de la ópera "Carmen" de Bizet, trasladando la acción a una comunidad negra en América que se estrenó como Carmen Jones.
Richard Rodgers, tras la muerte de su letrista Lorenz Hart, comenzó una colaboración con Oscar Hammerstein con algunos títulos hoy clásicos del musical americano como Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), El rey y yo (1951), y "Sonrisas y lágrimas" (1960).
Su trabajo denunciando temas como el racismo, el respeto por otras culturas o la violencia doméstica, abrió el camino a generaciones posteriores que escribirían musicales de corte dramático como West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Company, Los Miserables, etc.
