Oscar Hammerstein y Richard Rodgers escribieron nueve musicales para el teatro, además de uno para el cine “State Fair” (1945) y otro para televisión “Cinderella” (1957), que con el tiempo terminaron también subiendo al teatro.
Los musicales de Oscar Hammerstein tenían números divertidos y alegres, pero en sus trabajos siempre solía haber una llamada de atención a la sociedad frente al racismo, los malos tratos, una mujer enseñando a todo un rey, etc. El género denominado “comedia musical” a raíz de sus trabajos conectaron con el gran público, en una forma más directa que los comprometidos de Bertold Brecht y Kurt Weill y se perdió el término de “comedia”, abriendo el camino a musicales como “Cabaret” o “West Side Story”, a los que ya se denominarían sencillamente “musical”.
